The Archaeological Museum of Chania was founded in 1962 and was housed in the former Venetian monastery of St. Francis on Chalidon Street in the old town of Chania until 2020. It then closed its doors to move to a new modernist building on Skra Street, in the traditional eastern district of Chalepa, where it resumed operations in 2022.
The brand new building stands out with its strikingly versatile exterior façade and its architecturally clean, yet geometrically playful and interlaced lines. The floating outdoor terrace of the museum café offers a great view of the Chania skyline and the Cretan sea. Last but not least, the building was designed and constructed according to bioclimatic and sustainable principles.
